powernegi.tumblr.com/post/1320040294/ive-decided-im-sick-of-hearing-peopleI’ve decided I’m sick of hearing people… …slagging off labels and bands. This is mainly Holy Roar and i’ve heard it of TDON a bit and the bands that have become associated with these labels. The final straw for me was reading a Lavotchkin Widow Country review that ended with: “I’ll be keeping an eye roving for Lavotchkins next effort. They (to steal the cliche) show promise, however it’s unclear yet if this is the promise to start channeling that shit that made all the early 2000’s UK Metalcore scene so special, or the promise to start sounding like the rest of the shitty Holy Roar core crowd.” Who the hell is the Holy Roar core crowd?! Holy Roar as an amazing label, that helps/ has helped amazing bands such as, Rolo Tomassi, Throats, Crocus, Ergon Carousel, Maths, Hang The Bastard, Bastions, Jackals, Manuscripts, Easy Hips, the_Network, Trash Talk, Dreamboats, NeverXAgain and loads more! Wait just a second, these bands don’t sound like each other do they? No, they’re all different, they’re all doing good things in UK music like Holy Roar. Holy Roar and other big labels put in effort, promote and help bands - help the labels, help the bands, buy the records and quit what to me just seems like jealousy. There is something for everyone on holy roar so shut up with this ‘holy roar core’ bullshit. I know if the guy who wrote that lavotchkin review reads this he’ll think it’s targeted just at him but it isn’t, there’s loads of you out there. Sit back and appreciate what these labels and bands are doing. I think that’s all for today…

Being in a band that is associated with Holy Roar, I of course realise there is some hostility channeled towards the label and some of the bands involved. Personally, I understand some of the criticism and I have a few of my own criticisms also, but I really wish people wouldn't paint everyone associated with the label with the same brush. Maths, for example, are NOT a hardcore band and we never have been. We hate "moshing" and we encourage self-expression through creation rather than through aggression, however i'm sure there are other bands on the label that do not wish to be mentioned in the same breath as us, and so it's important to realise that each band associated with the label has it's own intents and purposes and it's own mindset and ideals. We are all different, and just because we release some records on the same label it doesn't smooth over those differences (and in some cases similarities.)
I hope this comes across in the way in which I mean it.

It's a classic case of not being able to please everyone. If people want to express their ignorance online then they can be my guests. The people with their heads screwed on, however, are better than these people as a whole.

judging a band by their label is ridiculous
there are some labels that give their bands the freedom to take any musical direction they want, just assist with promotion and getting that band out there
pretty sure Mindless Self Indulgence are on the same label as Lordi, couldn't be more different

Andrew, the 'zine that wrote the review you quoted seems to have some kind of axe to grind with HR. Or possibly just one or two of their reviewers are butthurt about something. I like some of their reviews but that sort of shit just seems childish to me. On the other hand I'm sure we've all made fun of some label we weren't into at some point, and unless things get genuinely vindictive I wouldn't read too much into it.
There are exceptions, e.g. the Cold War between Holy Roar and BSM is terrifying. That's gonna end in blood, anyone can see that.
Haters gonna hate, raters gonna rate.

The whole DIY community has an Axe with Alex and the label (same with TDON and BSM occasionally) and its petty, just cause HR give the DIY bands a change to do something bigger, the bands take up the opportunity, and are then shunned by the DIY hardcores who call them sell-outs etc, then there the whole HR are Fake DIY, which since I've never seen Alex claim the label to be DIY is just baby's spitting out there rattle because they can like anything that gains popularity and gets a bit of investment made into them. They then assume all the bands of HR are the same etc and rant bullshit that they clearly don't know about. It's rather amusing at times.

Much as I <3 the DIY scene, it does attract some self-righteous and intolerant idiots. Surely half the point of DIY is that not everything is done the same way?
We need someone to send them up the same way Crucial Youth did humourless sXedgers in MRR back in the 80s.
