Drunk In Public At Punk In Drublik Fest
19/04/11,
Coyotes, Galway, Ireland
Tuesday just passed saw what promised to be a great showcase for what the youth of today can do, but was unfortunately cut short by other displays of what youth can do.
Punk In Drublik, taking its namesake from the NOFX album, was a mini festival featuring a host of Irish punk and metal talent held in Coyotes bar.
Organised by a member of one of the bands, it was a true DIY event.
Kicking off the day was Castlebar Progressive Metal upstarts Morningrise, who tore through a blistering set of their own original material and covers of classics such asCrystal Skull by Mastodon.
Hair spinning and arms flailing, Morningrise then came to a triumphant halt and bowed down to much applause.
Next to hit the stage was Achill man Gareth "L'Estrange" McNamara who was minus his band, L'Estrange and The Thought Police but snarled through a solo acoustic punk set which included his own songs and covers such as The Clash's infamous anthem I Fought The Law, which felt quite fitting to the way the day's events would unfold. Leaving the stage, he left everyone with anti-establishment flowing through their pumping veins.
Headliners by technical default, Traitor from Westport were next to take the crowd by storm, from the first note, fists pumped and heads banged furiously. Every progressive death metal tune, their own or covers, that they pumped out, the more bloodthirsty they left the crowd. Finishing with a cover of the Napalm Death classic You Suffer, they left the crowd wanting more. After seeing a performance like this, there is no denying that the Irish Alternative scene is still alive and screaming.
Skyboy were only several chords into their first song when word broke through that the night's proceedings must come to a halt.
The darker aspects of youth culture, underage drinking of some people outside the venue had attracted the attention of the police who were forced to have to end the event on a low note.
The venue were more than nice about what had happened but unfortunately it was in the hands of the Gardai and was beyond anyone's control who was involved in the event.
Much to everyone's disappointment the night ended early, but other events will take place in Galway City, Castlebar, Westport and hopefully more in the coming months.
Bands who did not get to perform included: Ileknkus, Only Fumes & Corpses, Excuses, Snatch and Christians Vs. Lions.
Sincerest apologies would also like to be made from the organisers.
